OB/GYN-founded vitamin company announces US$4.7 million seed round

Perelel, the first OB-GYN-founded women’s vitamin company, has raised US$4.7 million in seed funding to improve reproductive health.

Unilever Ventures, the venture-capital and private-equity arm of Unilever, has led the seed round that closed on July 19.

The seed round has attracted influencers, including reality TV personality and fashion designer Whitney Port, fashion blogger Aimee Song, food and lifestyle blogger Gaby Dalkin and model Rocky Barnes.

“We are proud to announce the close of our Seed round led by Unilever Ventures with additional investors including Willow Growth Partners,” said Victoria Thain Gioia, one of the company’s founders, on her LinkedIn page.

“Our mission from day one has always been to create a world with more healthy, supported women and this means ensuring all women, everywhere have access to high quality healthcare.”

Perelel was launched by Alex Taylor, Victoria Thain Gioia and Dr. Banafsheh Bayati in 2020 and offers pre- and postnatal vitamins and supplements tailored for every stage of motherhood from pre-conception to postpartum.

Taylor and Thain Gioia came up with the idea behind Perelel in 2018 when they were frustrated with the one-size-fits-all approach to pre-natal nutrition products on the market.

They aimed to offer a range of vitamins and supplements that could deliver targeted nutrients at each unique stage of the reproductive life cycle and Bayati, Thain Gioia’s OB-GYN, came on board to oversee formulation, medical content and community relations.

The doctors and experts on the company’s advisory panel develop and review the products, alongside other OB-GYNs, maternal foetal medicine specialists, reproductive endocrinologists, dieticians, naturopathic doctors and paediatricians.

The company also sells a range of men’s multivitamin packs, iron and PCOS supplements and probiotics.
