Actress Halle Berry is teaming up with UCI researcher Pauline Maki to help advance menopause research and care.

Hosting an event at the University Club of Chicago, Berry and Maki led talks on the impact that menopause has on the economy, access to care and the need for menopause research investment.

Berry has been advocating for menopause research and care following her own experience of being misdiagnosed with herpes when she was actually experiencing early menopause symptoms, recently launching Respin, a health and wellness support which features a female longevity platform focussed on perimenopause and menopause.

Menopause expert Maki specialises in menopause’s impact on cognition, announcing the launch of the Center for Health, Awareness and Research on Menopause (CHARM) at UIC which will focus on addressing menopause gaps in care, research and training.

Speaking at the event, Maki said: “What you’re hearing today is the brainchild, the strategic plan of CHARM. We’re going to make a difference here in Chicagoland, with all of our partners, and we’re going to make a difference in the state of Illinois.

“We have tied them [menopause symptoms] to Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers, to apparent brain function, to little stroke-like lesions in the brain, to mood problems, memory problems. Women know this. You don’t need a scientist to tell you this, but we have an imperative to do better for women, don’t we? And we’re going to do that together.”
