This week we meet Marissa Fayer, CEO of DeepLook Medical. A renowned medical device expert and business adviser, Marissa advocates for health equity for women in the form of innovation, capital and leadership.
What is your morning routine?
I start my day with a green juice (AG1) and take my vitamins. I also catch up on the news and dive into emails. It’s a nice way to slowly start my day while getting my nutrients in!
Which technology could you not live without?
My phone. It just makes the world smaller no matter where I am, whether I’m traveling for work or connecting with people. I can be anywhere in the world and still have access to everything I need, from investors’ meetings to coordinating with our partners.
It’s great to carry around a small device where you have access to everything but also have the ability to shut off when you need some downtime.
How do you relax?
I relax by traveling and exploring new places. Along the way, I love meeting smart people, especially in the women’s health space. While it sounds like work, it’s actually relaxing and energising. My true relaxation comes from travel and exploration.
Do you have a specific quote that resonates with you?
Yes,”The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
What is the best thing about your job?
Improving women’s health on a daily basis is the best thing about my job.
What keeps you motivated?
Seeing every incremental and monumental improvement in healthcare, especially for women’s health, keeps me motivated. Every step forward makes a difference and motivates me to keep going because if we weren’t moving forward, there’d be nowhere else to go.
What is the most important lesson you have learned on your startup journey?
To keep thinking about the end customer. For us, that means focusing on women with dense breasts who need better imaging and to help prevent unnecessary procedures. Keeping our eye on the customer and understanding what clinicians need to do their job better ultimately benefits women.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Be open to all opportunities that present themselves. There’s no prescribed way to achieve your goals, so embrace the opportunities as they come. The path I took to get here was not what I imagined, nor were the opportunities available 20 years ago. Stay open to possibilities.
What is something you wish you could experience again for the first time?
I wish I could go back to my university days and be more intentional about networking and making connections. Building relationships with the right people and making better decisions about who to meet are experiences I’d love to have again.
Spend your time with people who support, inspire, and challenge you.
What is your greatest achievement since becoming the CEO of DeepLook?
My greatest achievement has been successfully delivering our solutions to women, enhancing their breast imaging, and making a significant impact by getting our products into the hands of customers.
